October is the inaugural Green Sports Month which is being by supported by EcoAthletes and is rallying sports fans to take positive climate action.
Czechia’s Patricie Mackova is one of the four Ladies European Tour (LET) players who is an EcoAthlete and championing sustainability in sports.
Ahead of Green Sports Month, the LET spoke to Mackova about all about her goals with sustainability.
Why is sustainability important to you?
I think the way we live today isn’t sustainable for future generations. I’m certainly not perfect, and I’m aware that as a professional athlete, especially a golfer who travels a lot, my carbon footprint is significant. But I believe the Earth isn’t ours to destroy, and every action we take has consequences. I think it’s about being aware of that and doing what you can.
What will you be doing during Green Sports Month?
I’ll be trying to be more conscious of the choices I make in my everyday life and while travelling. There are things I can’t always control as a professional athlete, but wherever I have a choice, I try to make the more sustainable one.
How can athletes/fans get involved?
It doesn’t have to be anything complicated. Things like avoiding unnecessary plastic, recycling properly, using reusable water bottles, reducing food waste, using public transport or car-sharing when possible, and being mindful of what you buy can all make a difference. You don’t have to be perfect — small actions from a lot of people can have a big impact.
What is your goal with sustainability?
I know my lifestyle comes with a bigger environmental footprint, but that doesn’t mean I shouldn’t try to reduce it where I can. Ultimately, I want future generations to be able to enjoy the same planet and nature that we do today.
How do you champion sustainability while playing on the LET?
Being a professional golfer gives me a platform, so I think it’s important to lead by example where I can. Golf is very connected to nature, and travelling the world playing the sport makes you appreciate how beautiful our planet is. I try to be mindful of my impact and hopefully encourage others to do the same.
The LET highlights sustainability activations through the LET Sustainability Initiative (LETSI), which is about using the power of our players to participate and showcase action and innovation across a range of priority issues such as environmental responsibility, community engagement, and working towards achieving tournament climate neutrality.
