Defending champion Bronte Law is back in Rabat this week for the Lalla Meryem Cup and is hoping to get her 2025 season off to a flying start at Royal Golf Dar Es Salam.
The three-time LET winner heads into this week as defending champion having clinched the title last year. Law produced a stunning comeback in 2024, firing a final round 64 (-9) to finish ahead of France’s Pauline Roussin-Bouchard and Spain’s Fatima Fernandez Cano.
Despite winning this tournament last year, Law will be approaching this week like any other tournament. “The danger for a lot of people is when you get to a tournament, you start doing things differently. I’ll just do everything the same that I usually do, and I’m looking forward to being back out on the course,” said Law.
The 29-year-old returns to Morocco following an offseason which saw her get married in the UK.
“It didn’t feel like there was much an offseason. It was amazing and really exciting. It was so incredible to have all of your family and friends on your special day to share that. It’s all been a bit of a whirlwind and back to work now.”
Reflecting on her 2024 performance, the defending Lalla Meryem Cup champion said: “There’s lots of positives to take away. I really enjoyed playing a full season on the LET. I really like the community feel, and that to me is really important. I also finished fifth in the Order of Merit so I felt like I had a good year. There’s always things you could have done better but it was a year of learning, trying to capitalise on experiences, and be a better player. They’re successes on and off the golf course, and I’m looking forward to building on that, and bringing that momentum into this year.”
Law has fond memories of Morocco having competed at LET Q School in 2018. The former UCLA student topped the list of 2019 graduates with a 26-under par, 334 total after scores of 70, 71, 62, 64 and 67. She broke the final stage scoring record by three shots.
Alongside the Lalla Meryem Cup this week will be the Hassan II Trophy, taking place on the Red Course, as part of the PGA Champions Tour 2025 season.
Law said: “It’s great to be back at this event, and I think it’s such a unique tournament being alongside the PGA Champions Tour. Everyone loves the interaction with the other players on the range and in the Players Lounge. It’s such a good opportunity and experience for our younger players. We need to continue to push forward to create these unique spectacles and this event is certainly one of those. I think everyone on the LET is really excited about this.”
The Englishwoman will be playing alongside five representatives from Morocco – all playing on home soil including Ines Laklalech, who carried her nation’s flag at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, Maha Haddioui, Lina Belmati, Malak Bouraeda, and 15-year-old Sofia Cherif Essakali, who is the youngest player in the field.
“The work that the Moroccan Federation are doing to grow the game for the women’s side is great,” Law said. “It’s proven in the stats with five players playing on home soil this week, with a couple having already represented their country in the Olympics. It just shows the hard work they are putting in and what positive impact this is having. This is certainly an example to show that with that work, these things can be achieved, and I hope that it continues to grow with the help of events like these in the future.”
As Law looks ahead to 2025, she defined some goals. “As I get older, I realise that a lot of the goals that I have are a lot smaller. They all come together and contribute to the bigger goals, and it’s the day-to-day processes that get you there. It’s not easy to just set yourself a goal of winning a major, winning the Order of Merit, but instead you have to put in the daily practices in order to get there.”
