Sustainability is at the heart of Naxhelet Golf Club, which is the host of this week’s LET tournament – the Mithra Belgian Ladies Open.
With positive action required to protect the environment, the Mithra Belgian Ladies Open is another example of a tournament where great sustainability work is being done.
This ties in the with LET initiative Celebrating the Green, Presented by Dow which aims to recognise and celebrate the sustainability activity – environmental, human, social and economic – stemming from players, partners, tournaments and venues.
After taking shape in 2012, the golf club finally opened its doors in 2014 and two pillars were the focus throughout which were: the use of local companies from building work through to suppliers and using an environmental approach.
Naxhelet Golf Club is GEO certified and is the only golf course in Wallonia, Belgium to have obtained the certification thanks to its organic maintenance.
This certification ensures that the golf club is as eco-responsible as it can be and they use only eco-responsible products and organic fertilisers.
The three water features on the course are linked and filled with land drainage and rainwater, which is used to the water the course.
There is a high-performance weather station on site to ensure forecasts are up-to-date and the course only needs to be watered when it is necessary.
Greens and fairways are sown with grasses to allow less irrigation, the golf carts are 100% electric, and maintenance of the golf course is based on prevention rather than cure.
During the Mithra Belgian Ladies Open, the golf club has committed to the serving of seasonal and local food and beverages, use of sorting bins, ecological toilets, reusable cups and an environmental charter for the food trucks on site.
