At this week’s ISPS HANDA Women’s Scottish Open, the same breast health science being delivered to the world’s best golfers is being offered to spectators at Dundonald Links.
For the past two years, the Ladies European Tour Performance Institute (LETPI) has been taking the science of the Research Group in Breast Health at the University of Portsmouth to LET tournaments through education workshops, breast and bra surveys, and one-to-one professional fittings for players.
This year the same fittings and education delivered to LET players inside the ropes is now being offered free to spectators in the fan village while they enjoy their day out watching the best in the world.
R&A funding directly supports this work through its partnership with the LETPI, which part-funds the project itself, alongside lululemon’s funding of the University of Portsmouth’s golf-specific research.
The R&A’s Golf is Good work frames the sport of golf as a population-level health intervention, citing evidence that golf can help prevent and treat 40 major chronic diseases with physical and mental benefits to being a golfer.
During the event on July 23 (Thursday) and 24 (Friday), free professional 15-minute sports bra fittings are on offer, plus breast support education thanks to backing from Active Scotland, a Scottish Government policy division working with ISPS HANDA and the Women’s Scottish Open to support public health impact projects.
The fittings are being delivered by trained fitters and researchers from the Research Group in Breast Health at the University of Portsmouth — Anna Vinnell and Laura Ingram — as part of the wider team led by Professor Joanna Wakefield-Scurr, working on site with the LETPI.
It is open to members of the public and spectators. You can walk up on the day or book an appointment in advance. In exchange, you learn how to check a bra properly for the rest of your life and become part of the movement of research within women’s sport and women’s golf.
