Anne Van Dam from the Netherlands made the most of her morning tee time as she shot a five-under-par 67 in calm and sunny conditions before the heavens opened causing the first of two weather delays during Thursday’s opening day at the Ricoh Women’s British Open.
Van Dam, the 2016 Xiamen International Ladies Open winner, is three strokes behind the clubhouse leader Michelle Wie after making six birdies and a bogey at Kingsbarns Golf Links.
The long-hitter from Arnhem said: “I really like Kingsbarns because I can hit lots of drives and you have a lot of space to hit it, although I didn’t need that much today! I really like the course. I played really well, was in control from tee to green and my putting was great. I could have shot eight or nine under par, but it was a relaxing day.”
Speaking about her goals for the next three days, she added: “Everyone wants to win, but there is a lot more golf to play and some crazy weather. It’s a long time until my second-round tee time at 3pm tomorrow!”
The first round was suspended for an hour from 3.40pm due to the threat of lightning and then resumed for a further hour, before a second delay of 17 minutes from 5.47pm.
