Taylor shoots 61 to set lowest ever round on LET

(Machynys Peninsula G&CC, Llanelli, Carmarthenshire – August 11 2005) England’s Kirsty Taylor carded an eleven under par 61 and set the lowest ever 18-hole score on the Robe di Kappa Ladies European Tour today in the opening round of the £350,000 Wales Ladies Championship of Europe at Machynys Peninsula G&CC, Llanelli.

“This course needs the wind to pick up to make it difficult, but that’s about as good a round of golf as I’ve ever played.”

Headliner Laura Davies, from England, is seven shots back after a four under par 68, despite starting with three consecutive birdies from the tenth, her first hole.

Becky Morgan, from Abergavenny, Eleanor Pilgrim from Newport and Kate Phillips, from Cardiff, are leading the Welsh charge at three under par 71.

Morgan, the Welsh number one, said: “We started off in misty conditions, which was easier and it was good to be playing with Laura (Davies), because she always draws a crowd.”

Becky Brewerton, from Abergele, had a level par 72, to trail the lead by eleven shots, but was feeling optimistic.

“I’m not worried and I feel confident going into tomorrow,” admitted the 22-year-old, adding: “It was just one of those days when I couldn’t get the putter going.

“I know there are so many birdies out there. It doesn’t surprise me that there are such low scores.”
