Thailand’s Trichat Cheenglab was forced into overcoming an unexpected obstacle en route to a 68 (-4) on Saturday at the La Sella Open, and it might just be one of the greatest escapes ever seen in the history of golf.
After opening with a 68 (-4) in the Ladies European Tour (LET) event, Cheenglab got off to a hot start in round two when she birdied her third hole on the par-4 12th.
But having hit her tee shot on the next hole, things suddenly took an unexpected turn for the Thai rookie when she ventured off for a quick loo break.
“Today I broke the toilet window and had to climb out because I got stuck in there,” Cheenglab explained. “I was worried because my [playing partners] were waiting for me on the fairway, so I used my elbow and I kicked it out.
“It was the door window and it was big, so I was able to climb out. So yeah, the window is broke now, sorry to the golf course!“
A few shots off the lead prior to the incident, Cheenglab, unsurprisingly shaken by the incident, would drop two shots in her next four holes before eventually rebounding to soar into contention in Spain.
She said: “I then three putted the next hole because I hurt my hand. I could not feel anything in my hand because I was slamming the door to get everyone to help me. Finally I got out and made bogey, but then there were four more birdies after that.”
Lighting up the flatstick on the front-nine (her back-nine) to eventually post a second consecutive 68 (-4), Cheenglab now sits just two shots off fellow rookie and leader Sara Kjellker on 10-under par.
And if the story wasn’t already enough, Cheenglab revealed in her post-round interview that this was the second toilet incident of the week for her and her team.
“Yesterday my boyfriend [and caddie] dropped the rangefinder in the toilet too,” the 27-year-old said. “Hopefully tomorrow is going to be my day!”
Following the heroic escape, Cheenglab will play in the final group at 10:46am on Sunday alongside Sweden’s Kjellker and France’s Anne-Charlotte Mora as she goes in pursuit of her maiden LET title.
