THOMPSON MOVES UP LEADERBOARD WITH ONE ROUND REMAINING

Lexi Thompson

Lexi Thompson fired a round of 68 (-4) on day two of the Aramco Team Series Presented by PIF – Tampa to move herself into contention.

The American star opened with a round of 71 (-1) at Feather Sound Country Club but followed that up with four-under on the second day.

Thompson dropped shots on the fifth and 16th holes but rolled in birdies on holes one, three, six, 13, 14 and 17 to be in a share of fifth place and sit just three shots back from leader Charley Hull.

The Major champion explained: “It’s been a great time, I always enjoy these events because I get to play with players and get to know them that I don’t really know.

“It’s great to see them out here and to be alongside an amateur as well, especially Jim Craig – one of the best of all. It’s just special, this tournament is different, and I think that’s what golf needs.”

Thompson teed it up with Finland’s Sanna Nuutinen, England’s Lily May Humphreys and their amateur was Jim Craig – Olympic gold medallist in ice hockey.

Speaking on her amateur, the 29-year-old said: “Jim is one of the best at hockey which is truly incredible. It’s always great to be alongside the best of their sport, I didn’t get to pick his brain too much.

“But he is a great personality and I hope he had so much fun out there the last two days. I know he was dealing with a bit of a heel injury. I hope he enjoyed the walk along with us.”

With one round remaining in Tampa, Thompson is looking forward to the final day and the challenge of the golf course.

There have been plenty of fans out watching the U.S. superstar and she loves performing in front of a crowd.

She added: “The golf course is in great shape for us. They can tuck some pins and especially if this wind blows, some of these pins can get very difficult. Some of the holes you take your par and run, and others you take advantage of especially some of the par-fives if you can reach them. It’s a great layout and it’s definitely challenging with the wind.

“It’s always great especially to see the little kids out there. To be able to grow the game for all ages. Fans make the game, I love it. The bigger the crowd, the better for me. That makes a world of difference, whether I play good or bad, they’re watching my bad shots and my good ones. It’s great to have the support.”
