STAGING A SUSTAINABLE EVENT: 2024 DUTCH LADIES OPEN

The Dutch Ladies Open is once again ensuring sustainability is at the heart of the tournament with plenty of initiatives happening this week.

It is the fourth edition of the tournament since it returned to the Ladies European Tour (LET) schedule, and the Dutch Ladies Open is taking place at Hilversumsche Golf Club between 19-21 July.

The LET is committed to recognising and promoting great sustainable work being done by the LET community as part of the Tour’s initiative LET Celebrating the Green presented by Dow in partnership with GEO Foundation for Sustainable Golf.

Sustainability and environmental issues are put to the forefront in the Netherlands with organisations understanding the responsibility they have to help contribute positively while meeting national regulations.

Hilversumsche Golf Club is the venue for the second consecutive year and the golf club is a GEO Certified Venue – the NGF only allows venues which are GEO Certified to host their tournaments.

Some of the key initiatives taking place at this week’s Dutch Ladies Open revolve around cycling, water stations, the use of recycled materials and the junior Pro-Am.

Cycling is a popular mode of transport in the Netherlands and this rings true for the tournament as well, as spectators and volunteers in the region are encouraged to cycle to the venue.

Players, volunteers and spectators are requested to bring their own refillable water bottles, as no plastic bottles of water will be handed out or sold, and there are refill stations available for everyone to use on site.

Event materials from last year’s tournament such as flags, banners and canvases have been recycled and turned into new products such as bags which are being given out as gifts in the Pro-Am and to volunteers.

On Wednesday 17 July, a junior Pro-Am has taken place with the purpose of inspiring young girls to take up the game of golf.

More than 40 girls aged between 8 and 21 were on site where they were able to watch Dutch star Anne Van Dam practice and they also had the opportunity to ask several LET professionals questions in a press conference which was held before the Pro-Am.

Jelle Sprée, Promoter of the Dutch Ladies Open, said: “Sustainability has an impact on all players during the tournament week, from organising sustainability travel to and from the golf course to enjoying the locally produced catering on offer, as well as eliminating plastic water bottle and using our on-course water stations. We have made lots of progress in two years and plan to keep doing so.”
