Emma Spitz produced the back nine of her life to move into the top 10 of the 2024 Tipsport Czech Ladies Open.
It was quite the turnaround for Spitz who was three-over after seven holes but ended the day five-under and in a share of fifth place.
“I was three over after six or seven holes today and then suddenly I was three-under – I thought that’s decent,” she said.
“In my head, I was saying I will give myself another two good chances and that turned out pretty good for five-under. I didn’t expect it after the front nine.
“My best round was a 64, I may have had a 29 or 30 on one nine before but definitely not a 28!”
The Austrian began her day on the 10th tee but didn’t get off to the best of starts at Royal Beroun Golf Club.
Spitz made a bogey on 10 followed by a birdie on 11 but she then had back-to-back bogeys on 12 and 13 and another on 16.
However, the 24-year-old then went on a birdie blitz rolling in birdies on the first and third holes before making two on the trot on the fifth and sixth holes.
Spitz made an eagle on the seventh and finished her round in style with birdies on eight and nine to seal a back nine of 28 (-8) and have a total of five-under-par at the end of the first day.
“It was crazy! The start was really terrible,” she continued. “I made a birdie on one which was my tenth hole and that felt good.
“Then we had the delay for two hours and then I knew I had to keep going. I thought four birdies would be really nice, to get under par and that would be fine.
“I made another birdie and another and another and an eagle and finished with two birdies, I was like what’s going on? The shots just went the way I planned and the putts rolled the way I wanted them to. It was very nice.
“The longest putt that I made was ten feet, I had a couple that were really close and then a couple that were six-to-eight feet. It was a mix, it was crazy, I don’t know what happened. I was in such a tunnel all of a sudden. I said I’ll just keep going.”
