PROMOTING THE IMPORTANCE OF NATURE AT LET TOURNAMENTS

It’s the fourth day of the 2024 Sustainable Golf Week and today the Ladies European Tour (LET) is reviewing how nature and golf go hand in hand.

The 2022 edition of the Women’s Scottish Open made history by becoming the first LET tournament to become a GEO Certified Tournament.

Earlier this year, another tournament also joined that status with the 2023 edition of the VP Bank Swiss Ladies Open – which was hosted at Migros Golfpark Holzhäusern – becoming the first LET event in continental Europe to receive the certification.

The widely regarded, credible distinction is overseen by GEO Sustainable Golf Foundation and reflects the tournament’s commitments, actions and positive impacts throughout the planning, staging and legacies of the event.

“We are delighted that the most important professional golf tournament for women in Switzerland has made a formal commitment to continuous improvement in the ecological, economic, and social aspects of its activities. Obtaining the GEO certification marks an important step in the implementation of concrete action plans and helps to reinforce the credibility and visibility of sustainable development in our sport. Congratulations to all the people involved in this process!” said Michel Follonier, Swiss Golf Director.

With Greenlinks, The R&A’s programme for sustainable championships, the AIG Women’s Open is on a journey to protect and promote nature as well as embrace low carbon technology, innovate for a circular economy and enhance social value across championship operations.

At this year’s championship, TV production and broadest was, for the first time powered by Green Hydrogen – a highly efficient emerging energy source producing zero emissions.

The St Andrews Links Trust (SALT) used electric and hybrid mowers, reducing carbon footprint and noise distribution to local wildlife.

In addition, Dr Marie Athorn, RSPB Business Conservation Advisor (Golf – R&A) representing The R&A and RSPB’s partnership to support golf that is good for nature, and Ranald Strachan, Lead West Sands Ranger at St Andrews Links Trust, guided on-site nature tours to engage with the public, demonstrating that golf tournaments and courses can be managed with nature in mind.

Similarly, at the 2024 ISPS HANDA Women’s Scottish Open, nature walks with the RSPB also happened across the week to highlight the conservation efforts of Dundonald Links.

The Ladies European Tour (LET) and the LET Access Series (LETAS) is committed to recognising and promoting great sustainable work being done by the LET community as part of the Tour’s initiative LET Celebrating the Green presented by Dow in partnership with GEO Foundation for Sustainable Golf.
