Golfers from the Ladies European Tour (LET) and DP World Tour joined forces and participated in a beach clean at the Volvo Car Scandinavian Mixed.
Sustainability is one of the key pillars of the tournament, which is being played at Halmstad Golf Club in Sweden, with a big focus on environmental responsibility.
And four players, two from each tour, headed down to the local beach to pick up litter alongside some local school kids on Tuesday June 7.
LET players Julia Engström and Elin Arvidsson, who are both local to the Halmstad area, were on hand to assist.
“When I was asked if I could join in with this initiative, I was so proud to feel like Sweden is making a big deal of this,” said Arvidsson. “The situation with the sea, we don’t want the trash that we bring onto the beach to end up in the ocean.”
Engström added: “I think it is very important to just have a clean society and sustainability is very important. To see the kids and help out a bit is great, so it is good to do something else as well.”
While DP World Tour players Johannes Veerman and Jason Scrivener also picked up litter and interacted with the local children.
“It is always good when you enter a room, to leave the room better than when you found it, so here we are with the local kids in the community and we’re cleaning up the beach,” said Veerman. “I think it is important, we only have one planet earth, and we have to take care of her as best as we can.”
Scrivener added: “I think it is important that we do our bit to help out, it’s a really clean beach but we have managed to pick up a fair bit of trash and do our bit, so it has been great.”
In December 2020, the LET launched Celebrating the Green, presented by Dow which is an initiative which aims to recognise and promote great sustainable work – environmental, human, social and economic – being done by payers, partners, tournaments and venues.
Maria Grandinetti, Head of Corporate Social Responsibility at the DP World Tour, said: “It is really a wonderful initiative not only for the Volvo Car Scandinavian Mixed but also for the DP World tour here in Sweden, which is absolutely flying the flag for sustainability, it is remarkable what they do not only nationally but also within the local municipality.”
Mayor of Halmstad Municipality, Jonas Bergman, said: “This is the way we want to work with international events linking our core values to the actual event. By daring to invest in sustainability I think we could be a good role model for future generations.”
