A group of Ladies European Tour members took time out from their busy preparations for the Sberbank Golf Masters to visit Pilsen’s mayor, Martin Baxa, on Thursday. As well as being invited to the renaissance town hall, they were also able to tour the picturesque city, which has been named the European Capital of Culture 2015.
In the Republic Square, they climbed the 301 steps in the 102-metre tall church tower of the gothic St Batholomew’s Cathedral and enjoyed spectacular views across the surrounding city, which includes a view of the Great Synagogue, the world’s third largest Jewish temple, the three modern fountains and Franciscan Monastery.
Established in 1295 in the heart of Europe, Pilsen’s location has brought it wealth in both trade and the arts and this fact is reflected in its architecture. Today, the population is 168,000 and it covers an area of 138 square kilometres.
