Italy’s Diana Luna was rushed to the doctor after the first round of the AAMI Australian Women’s Open with swollen glands and a large mark on her right cheek.
The St Johns Ambulance division at Terrey Hills GC suspected that the 20-year-old from Rome was bitten by a White tail spider while she was in Queensland the previous week. But as is usual with the species, the inflicted wound had only manifested itself a week later.
While the White Tail spider’s venom is not extremely high in toxicity, if Luna’s wound was left untreated, it would cause serious tissue damage, especially on the face.
