Catriona Matthew celebrates at North Berwick Golf Club
The 2019 European Solheim Cup Captain, Catriona Matthew, launched the beginning of ‘Year to Go’ celebrations today at North Berwick Golf Club in front of more than 100 children, local businesses and community members ahead of the biennial event at Gleneagles from 9 – 15 September 2019.
Greeted by what felt like the whole of North Berwick, Matthew, who lives a stone’s throw away from the Club, hosted a Q&A session in the clubhouse and a chipping clinic as well as signing autographs and posing for photos with the iconic trophy.
Matthew also paraded the trophy in to North Berwick on a walking trophy tour, stopping by at local businesses including Anderson’s Quality Butchers, North Berwick Fry, Sweet News, Sugar Mountain, and The Scottish Seabird Centre before stopping off at The Harbour.
The trophy tour exemplifies the ‘My Moment’ event theme, seeing local supporters recognised as a key factor to Team Europe’s success. This underlines that the Solheim Cup is about more than the three-day battle on course but also about the army of fans behind Catriona Matthew.
Attendees of the day received a special North Berwick supporter t-shirt, which is only available to local fans, and will enable them to take advantage of a special ticket offer in the lead up to next September.
The ‘Year to Go’ celebrations will be taking place until September 10th with a feast of activities scheduled across Scotland including Glasgow, Edinburgh, Dundee, Perth and Gleneagles.
Commenting on the day, Catriona Matthew, said, “It was amazing to start the countdown to next year in North Berwick. I was overwhelmed by the amount of people that turned up to celebrate this special moment. Looking around the room I recognised many of the faces and hope I’ll see many of those same faces next September at Gleneagles. With the support of North Berwick and the rest of Europe behind us, I’m confident we have a great chance of bringing the Solheim Cup trophy back to Scotland.”
Speaking from North Berwick, Ryan Anderson, Anderson’s Quality Butchers said, “We are all firmly behind our girl. She has made the town so proud in all that she has achieved and we know she’ll do us proud as Captain of Europe. The whole town is behind her.”
Paul Bush, Director of Events, VisitScotland, said, “Catriona Matthew is a fantastic ambassador for Scottish Golf and the Solheim Cup and we’re proud to celebrate this moment with her at North Berwick. Today is only the start of our ‘Year to Go’ activities, with more planned around Scotland over the next month and we’re looking forward to seeing the country support her and this event.”
