At the 2023 edition of the Amundi German Masters, Cara Gainer came close to clinching her first LET title but ultimately lost in a playoff.
However, the English star returns to Golf & Country Club Seddiner See in good form and is hoping to go one better this year.
Gainer recently secured victory at the Rose Ladies Series event winning at Southport & Ainsdale in tough conditions.
“It wasn’t easy, it was blowing an absolute hooley,” she said. “At least, it was a links course and that made it a bit better than it was.
“It was great to get over the line, that justified my decision to not play South Africa. It was good to play the Rose Ladies Series and nice to support that and take home a nice cheque.”
Gainer has had a solid season to date making the cut in every event she has played and recording a top-10 finish at the Women’s NSW Open.
That good finish in Australia and another solid round at Bonville Golf Resort – where the Australian’s Women’s Classic had to be shortened to 18 holes – has given the 28-year-old a confidence boost.
She explained: “I feel like the game has really come into its own in the last month or so since Australia. I got a bit of confidence from Magenta [Shores] finishing fourth.
“I played solid last week with T20, I just really struggled with jetlag. I pretty much played on no sleep for the week which wasn’t easy. I’m feeling fresh coming here and I enjoy this golf course a lot. Hopefully, I can go one better than last year.”
Gainer will begin her title challenge at 1.39 pm (local time) alongside Spain’s Carmen Alonso and Czechia’s Sara Kouskova.
Having finished T16 at the 2022 edition of the Amundi German Masters and losing last year in a playoff, she knows this course suits her.
Despite the course playing a little differently than previous years, the English star believes her aggressive style of play will pay off.
She added: “It’s playing a little different, it’s a playing a little longer because we’re slightly earlier in the season. It’s not quite as firm as it was last year, so it’s playing slightly longer and looks like it’s going to be super windy this week.
“It was windy last year but it looks like it’s going to be a bit more of a challenge this year, we’ll see what happens.
“You need to be aggressive and I’m quite an aggressive player in general. If I can get there and I can reach, no matter what the trouble is, then I’ll try and go for it.
“That’s how I made my score last year as well. I hit a lot of good shots and was in play a lot and I putted well. I’m hoping everything comes together just like last year.”
