FIVE TALKING POINTS AHEAD OF THE ANDALUCÍA COSTA DEL SOL OPEN DE ESPAÑA

Trichat Cheenglab

It’s the final tournament of the Ladies European Tour (LET) season and the Tour is back in Spain for the Andalucía Costa del Sol Open de España.

The finale is being held at the beautiful Real Club de Golf Las Brisas with 75 players from 22 nations teeing it up for their share of €650,000.

Before the tournament starts, here are a few talking points to look out for…

Race to Costa del Sol reaches climax

The season-long competition to crown the LET’s number player reaches its thrilling climax this week with the 2023 Race to Costa del Sol champion to be decided. With just one event left to play, there are six players who have a mathematical chance of taking home the prestigious title.

Thailand’s Trichat Cheenglab leads the way and has a 168.84 points buffer over Major champion Celine Boutier. India’s Diksha Dagar is third, just 219.61 points behind while Johanna Gustavsson, Alexandra Försterling and Ana Peláez Trivino all have to win in Spain to have a chance.

Rookie of the Year to be decided

Trichat Cheenglab is hoping to go home with two trophies by the end of this week as she also leads in the Rookie of the Year standings. Since her victory at the Big Green Egg and consistent performance, the Thai star had built a big lead in the competition.

However, a good run of form for Sweden’s Sara Kjellker and Germany’s Alexandra Försterling means the title comes down to the final event. Last week’s winner Försterling is 413.63 points behind Cheenglab and would have to win again this week in Spain to have any chance of taking home the Rookie of the Year trophy.

Defending champion in attendance

Caroline Hedwall secured her seventh LET victory at the 2022 edition of the Andalucía Costa del Sol Open de España, which was held at Alferini Golf. The Swede defeated Switzerland’s Morgane Metraux after a four-hole playoff when she sunk her birdie putt to win for the first time in four years.

Just a couple of months ago, Hedwall added to more good memories in Spain being part of Team Europe and clinching a crucial point in the Sunday Singles which gave Carlota Ciganda the chance to hole the putt that retained the Solheim Cup for Europe. It was an historic moment with Europe claiming three in-a-row for the first time in history.

Home favourites aplenty

There is plenty of Spanish interest in the tournament this week with 14 Spanish players teeing it up at Real Club de Golf Las Brisas. Amongst them are three Spanish amateurs with Andrea Revuelta, Cayetana Fernandez and Julia Lopez Ramierz all getting the chance to tee it up in an LET event.

They are joined by former champions Carlota Ciganda and Azahara Muñoz, as well as Race to Costa del Sol contender Ana Peláez Trivino and winners from this season Carmen Alonso and Nuria Iturrioz.

Last week to make it count

With it being the final event of the season, this is the last week for players to cement their status for 2024 and secure their full LET card. The top 70 in the rankings will earn Category 4 status for next season.

Those on the bubble competing this week are: Eleanor Givens (68th), Hayley Davis (69th), Laura Beveridge (70th), Anne-Lise Caudal (71st), Leonie Harm (73rd), Sanna Nuutinen (75th), Renate Grimstad (76th), Linnea Johansson (77th), Elin Arvidsson (79th) and Magdalena Simmermacher (80th).
