COWAN RECORDS BEST MAJOR FINISH AT AIG WOMEN’S OPEN

Germany’s Olivia Cowan had a week to remember at the AIG Women’s Open as she recorded her best result in Major championship to date finishing T9 at Walton Heath.

The one-time Ladies European Tour (LET) winner made a solid start in England as opened with back-to-back rounds of 72 (level par) on Thursday and Friday to make the cut by two shots.

With moving day bringing the winds and producing some higher scoring, Cowan then jumped up the leaderboard thanks to a 71 (-1) in round three which included five birdies.

As Charley Hull and Lilia Vu battled it out for the title on the final day – the latter landing her second Major victory of the season with a six-shot win – Cowan went under par again firing a round of 70 (-2) to finish inside the top-10.

“The weekend was a nice little weekend to finish on,” she said. “I played really well, and it was just a grind out there both days, quite windy. I knew that I had to battle through it. I really enjoyed it.

“I had one goal all week and that was to have a good mentality. I didn’t want to get angry at any shots, disappointed or anything. If I had a bad hole, I just wanted to move on from it and focus on the rest. That’s what I was trying to do and I think that’s what helped me.”

With the memorable performance, her best ever in a Major championship, Cowan moves to 14th in the Race to Costa Del Sol standings.

“[It gives me] a lot of confidence,” Cowan continued, who was playing in front of plenty of English friends at family at Walton Heath. “I’ve been playing well all year, so it’s nice to them play well in such a big event, as well. So yeah, I’m excited for the rest of the year.

“It’s really nice to do it down here where I just have all of that support. I think that means a lot to me. Yeah, just really happy with how I played, and I think I’ve been waiting for it, so yeah, pretty good.”

Next up for Cowan and the LET is the ISPS HANDA World Invitational Presented By AVIV Clinics at Galgorm & Castlerock Golf Club.
