ANDALUCÍA COSTA DEL SOL OPEN DE ESPAÑA SUPPORTS THE FUNDACIÓN BLANCA’S COMMITMENT TO MENTAL HEALTH

By Andalucía Costa del Sol Open de España presented by Oysho

  • The last tournament of the Ladies European Tour (LET) calendar joins forces with the Fundación Blanca to raise funds and make visible the importance of the mental health of elite sportsmen and women.

The Fundación Blanca de Apoyo al Deportista, created in 2022, is the first foundation entirely focused on elite athletes. This foundation will receive the support of the Andalucía Costa del Sol Open de España presented by Oysho. The prestigious tournament, which will be held from 28 November to 1 December at the Real Guadalhorce Club de Golf in Malaga, is the last tournament of the season on the Ladies European Tour (LET) and will be the perfect setting to highlight the importance of mental health in high performance sport.

The Foundation’s name is a loving tribute to skier Blanca Fernández Ochoa, one of Spain’s most iconic sportswomen. Blanca was the first Spanish woman to win an Olympic medal, at the 1992 Winter Olympics. The foundation, launched in her memory, was born with the purpose of offering the personal support that many athletes did not have, focusing on improving the personal and professional conditions of athletes, both during their career and at the delicate moment of retirement.

Lola Fernández Ochoa, president of the foundation and sister of the late Blanca, says: “We will do everything we can to make mental health in sport visible and normalised, identifying the indicators and triggers, and offering tools to break down the prejudices and taboos surrounding this issue. Working on mental health is the first medal we must offer our young athletes.”

The support of the Andalucía Costa del Sol Open de España presented by Oysho will be a key piece for the Fundación Blanca to amplify its message and raise awareness about the importance of emotional wellbeing in sport. Lola wanted to thank Deporte &Business, as promoter of the event, for the opportunity to make the Foundation and its projects known in an event of such magnitude, stressing that “it is crucial to break stigmas and offer support to athletes”.

This initiative highlights the importance of mental balance as an essential pillar in the success of athletes. The combination of sporting excellence and emotional wellbeing is a commitment shared by both organisations, which will be reflected during the tournament at the Real Guadalhorce Club de Golf.
