It was a successful day for an abundance of Ladies European Tour (LET) stars at the AIG Women’s Open Final Qualifier in England as 11 members earned their way into the field at Royal Lytham & St Annes.
A total of 13 spots were up for grabs in the final Major of the year with 111 players taking to the fairways at St Anne’s Old Links Golf Club.
After a long day of golf on England’s west coast, home player Bel Wardle and Belgium’s Manon De Roey came out on top firing rounds of 68 (-4) to qualify for this week’s AIG Women’s Open.
Wardle, a member of the LET Access Series (LETAS), will tee up at her first Major championship thanks to the excellent scorecard in windy conditions.
“I can’t believe it,” the Englishwoman said. “I was stood on the 16th tee and thought, ‘wow, I could be in the British Open here’. But I knew I still had two holes to play. When I finally holed my putt on the 18th, I knew was actually happening.”
“I’ve had some tough times this past few years, but this year I’ve started to play some really consistent golf. I’ve made seven out of seven cuts on the LET Access Series which I’m really happy with. I’ve had a runner-up too so the season is going well. This has topped it off.”
Qualifying in a tie for third on three-under par were Australia’s Justice Bosio, England’s Annabell Fuller, France’s Vanessa Bouvet, Spain’s Carla Tejedo Mulet and amateur Lauren Crump from England.
Both Bosio and Bouvet will also compete at their first Major championship this week thanks to the Final Qualifier success.
“I just told myself to go out there and have some fun,” 22-year-old Bosio said. “We played a practice round here yesterday and it was crazy windy. Coming out this morning, I was in the fourth group out which was a nice draw. It felt very calm compared to yesterday so I felt like I could attack some more.
“Overall, I’m just really excited. It hasn’t quite sunk in yet because I’ve been waiting around all afternoon. But now I’ve got my player handbook and filled out everything. I’m ready for the week! Everything about it is major. It’s really exciting.”
Tejedo Mulet meanwhile, a dual-member of both the LET and LPGA, carded a clutch eagle on the 18th to punch her ticket to Royal Lytham & St Annes. The appearance will be at first at the AIG Women’s Open.
Drama followed late into the evening as eight players were tied for eighth on two-under par with just six spots remaining at Royal Lytham & St Annes.
Ireland’s Anna Foster came out victorious on the first playoff hole carding a birdie on the 1st to secure a third appearance at the AIG Women’s Open.
After two more extra holes, LET members Ana Pelaez Trivino from Spain, Polly Mack from Germany, Chloe Williams from Wales, Jodi Ewart Shadoff from England plus America’s Amanda Doherty earned their spots in the field. Norway’s Dorthea Forbrigd and Sweden’s Ingrid Lindblad were the unlucky pair who will now be reserves for the final Major of the year.
