Marine Monnet from France continued her success at the LPGA final qualifying school at Daytona Beach with a second round three under par 69 to add to her opening 66 and maintain second place behind American veteran Marilyn Lovander.
The 24-year-old from Paris sits on nine under par and is two shots behind Lovander who also had a 69.
Norway’s Suzann Pettersen made her move up the leaderboard with a three under 69 and ties for sixth position on four under alongside Solheim Cup team mate and newly crowned European number one Paula Marti from Spain.
Marti had to play the last hole of her opening round as darkness prevented her from finishing in day one and despite bogeying the hole for a 69, she regrouped and carded a 71.
One shot further back in a tie for tenth place is the former top European Raquel Carriedo from Spain who added a 67 to her opening 74.
England’s Johanna Head is well on course to improve her existing LPGA conditional card after a brace of 71’s left her tied for 15th place as she chases one of the 23 full cards available this week.
Georgina Simpson leads the British challenge after rounds of 71 and 73 left her on level par and tied for 25th, one shot clear of fellow Evian Tourist and Solheim Cupper Iben Tinning from Denmark, who slipped to a 73.
Germany’s Elisabeth Esterl made amends for her opening 75 and raced up the leaderboard with a 71 to sit on two over in 45th spot, tied with, among others, Scotland’s Pam Wright, the 2002 European team vice Captain. And Asa Gottmo from Sweden, the Wales WPGA Championship of Europe winner, is on three over after a 74.
It was better news for Trish Johnson who, with a 72, recovered from her opening 78, but Johnson is still six over par and will have to work hard to make the third round cut, as will Samantha Head (74-76) and Chorley’s Lora Fairclough (75-75) and Ana Belen Sanchez (77-73), all tied with Johnson.
And Sweden’s Marlene Hedblom will be devastated after an 81 in the second round, having opened ten shots better.
The top 23 players will earn exempt status for the 2003 LPGA Tour and the next 35 players and ties will receive conditional/non-exempt status cards. A sudden-death playoff will be held, if necessary, to determine the 23rd and final exempt spot.
