KOMULAINEN FIRES COURSE RECORD AND CAREER-BEST ROUND IN AUSTRALIA

Noora Komulainen recorded her best Ladies European Tour (LET) round to date on Saturday at the Australian WPGA Championship firing the Sanctuary Cove course record 63 (-8) to soar up the leaderboard.

The Finnish star recorded an impressive 10 birdies on the Palms course and dropped two shots to better Kelsey Macdonald and Annabell Fuller’s number on the track by one shot.

“I lost count [of my score] on the back nine,” the 35-year-old said, who birdied her final hole to break the record. “I chipped in on 17. I mean, obviously it was a great day. My ball-striking was very good and I holed some putts. So that was a very nice day on the golf course.”

Komulainen’s scorecard was made even more remarkable given she was even-par for the day through seven holes. Eight birdies would follow on a scintillating closing stretch in Australia.

“I just started hitting very well,” she said. “My putting game has been very good whole week, but I’ve been struggling a bit on my longer game. But obviously, I don’t know, just clicked and I started hitting very well.”

Komulainen, a two-time Olympian, has been competing on the LET since 2013 and sits just shy of 200 starts. The impressive scorecard was her lowest round to date on the circuit where she has 18 top-10 finishes.

“I’m very surprised,” she said on her longevity. “After every season, I’m still trying to get better and obviously I’m still chasing my first win, so I guess that’s why I’m still here.

“To be honest, I’m feeling a bit tired, but I guess that suits me. But yeah, obviously one more day to go and hopefully a good problem.”

Thanks to record-setting round, Komulainen will tee up in the penultimate group on Sunday at the Australian WPGA Championship after moving to 10-under par for the tournament. She sits T4 and trails Major winner Hannah Green by four shots with 18 holes remaining.
