TAN RELISHING INDIA RETURN AND HOPING TO GO ONE BETTER

Shannon Tan

Shannon Tan is excited to be back at the Hero Women’s Indian Open after finishing one shot behind the winner in 2024.

The Singaporean ended last year’s tournament in a share of second place behind winner Liz Young at DLF Golf and Country Club.

Tan, who secured her second Ladies European Tour (LET) title earlier in June, has been wanting to return to this tournament since last year.

“I’ve been looking forward to this event after playing it last year,” she said. “I lost by one and came in second, so ever since that I’ve wanted to come back.

“I played well during the last round last year, but over that whole week I was just focused on hitting fairways and greens and keeping the ball in play on this course, especially as it can be quite challenging, and just being on the correct side of the green depending on your position.“

The Gary Player-designed par-72 championship course is notoriously challenging, but Tan enjoys that element of the game.

With more rainfall in recent months, the course is playing differently to 2024; however, the Olympian believes it will still be difficult despite the greens being softer than previously.

She continued: “I was quite surprised by the course this year, they’ve had rain so the greens are softer and not as fast as last year, but they have grown the rough out this year.

“It’s different, but it’s still challenging. With the rough how it is, you’ve got to be on the fairways and with the greens being softer you can go at the pins a bit more now, but you still have to be cautious with your misses.”

Tan has had an extremely consistent season on the LET and currently sits second in the LET Order of Merit – just 209.54 points behind leader Mimi Rhodes of England.

As well as securing her second victory on Tour, the 21-year-old has also recorded six further top-10 finishes throughout the year.

The two-time LET winner, now in her second season on the LET, believes her biggest learning curve was around scheduling.

She added: “The biggest thing I’ve learned from last year was that I played too many events and got a bit burned out. I’ve been taking a few weeks off and not playing five events in a row, I’ve done max three and then taking a week off and getting back to basics technically.

“It would mean a lot to win this week, having come close last year. I’m going to go in with the same mindset as the rest of the year and try my best out there. To win the Order of Merit would also mean a lot as you’ve got some big names on that list and to be there with them mean be a lot to me. I need to keep doing what I’ve been doing, that’s the plan and I can’t control what everyone else does.”

Tan will tee it up in the first round of the Hero Women’s Indian Open at 11.22 am (local time) alongside English duo Rhodes and Young.
