Gabriella Cowley had a memorable week at the Volvo Car Scandinavian Mixed as she went low to finish T5 at Ullna Golf Club and produce her best finish of the 2023 Ladies European Tour (LET) season so far.
Playing alongside home favourite Madelene Sagström on the final day in Sweden, the Englishwoman carded four birdies and a fourth eagle of the week to finish as the second best female behind Dutchwoman Anne van Dam on 14-under-par.
“Obviously it was a great week,” Cowley said. “I played really solid. It was just a good day. Playing with Maddie [Sagström] we shared a lot of fans and support so it was nice to be a part of that and play well too.”
With the T5 finish, Cowley picks up the biggest paycheque of her career banking €61,420.89. The 27-year-old also collects 113.75 Race to Costa del Sol points to move her into 20th position in the LET’s yearlong standings.
“To be fair the money is just a bonus,” Cowley continued. “I’ve been playing pretty good but just haven’t really had it [a low finish]. So to actually do it in a four day tournament and produce the shots that I needed when I needed it most was a big thing for me.”
The result marks another successful week for Cowley in the co-sanctioned event with the DP World Tour after she placed T15 last year to also finish as the second best female behind Sweden’s Linn Grant.
Carding a sensational four eagles this week – including three on Saturday en route to posting a 64 (-8) and the lowest round of her LET career so far – Cowley now leads the way when it comes to the total number of eagles in 2023 with seven.
Explaining her fourth of the week, a chip-in on the par-5 15th, the Englishwoman said: “I hit such a good shot in there and it was really unlucky that it just went over the green.
“I was happy to see the lie that I had. It was a nice lie and I knew that I could play a pretty good shot. I was talking to my dad going up the fairway and I told him I can eagle this one and he said ‘Gabs, just do one shot at a time, please’, I said ok, and then obviously chipped it in!’
“My dad is a massive part of my golf, and obviously my life too. The help that he gives me on and off the course, but especially this week, was really good.”
Cowley moves on to Berlin next for the Amundi German Masters where she will be full of confidence following her memorable week in Stockholm.
“Playing these sorts of weeks gives you so much confidence,” she said. “It’s great to play against the guys and see where your game is at. It’s a big confidence boost and a stepping stone in the right direction.”
