With golf etched in her genes, Cheyenne Woods will demonstrate her burgeoning talent when she makes her first appearance in the Omega Dubai Ladies Masters being held under the patronage of HRH Princess Haya Bint Al Hussein, wife of HH Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, at Emirates Golf Club from December 7 to 13.
Cheyenne’s break-out victory in the Australian Ladies Masters in February this year marked a significant step in the young professional’s career.
“I’ve been a pro for two years and, for the majority of it, people just think of me as Tiger Woods’ niece, so now I have a game of my own and I have a title now, a win, which is exciting,” the 24-year-old from Phoenix, Arizona said after her first win on the Ladies European Tour.
“It’s nice now to say to people that I can play and I’m not just a name,” said the young prodigy, who joined the Ladies European Tour in 2013.
At the moment, she is excited at the prospect of playing for the first time on Emirates Golf Club’s Majlis course, the scene of her legendary uncle’s famous Omega Dubai Desert Classic victories in 2006 and 2008.
“I have never been to Dubai, but have heard a lot of great things about the tournament. This is demonstrated by the strong field there each year,” said Cheyenne, who enjoyed a decorated amateur career, winning over 30 tournaments, before turning pro in 2012.
She started playing golf when she just was five years old. “I feel like my game is solid and it will be fun to play in the event which has an impressive list of winners. I’ve always wanted to go and play in this magnificent city.”
Cheyenne will join defending champion Pornanong Phatlum of Thailand, English legend Laura Davies and rising star Charley Hull among other notable golfers in the 108-player field.
Mohamed Juma Buamaim, vice-chairman and CEO of ‘golf in DUBAi, said: “We are delighted to have such a vibrant young talent as Cheyenne playing in Dubai. Her energy will light up the tournament and add to our huge galleries. She is an inspiration for so many young girls and, like everyone else, we will be keenly following her progress. I wish her the best and hope she has a wonderful stay in Dubai.
