Both Europe’s Solheim Cup victories have come in terrible weather. The first was at an overcast Dalmahoy in 1992 and the second was also in Scotland when the heavens never closed at Loch Lomond three years ago.
The second practice day in the build-up to the start of action at Barseback was marred by frequent interruptions for lashing rain, although it failed to dampen the spirit of the home side.
“We’re used to this,” was the consensus among the European plyaers, although the Americans did their best to smile in adversity.
“We played 18 holes yesterday and three days is plenty time to get to know the course,” suggested Juli Inkster.
Laura Diaz, a former Ladies European Tour rookie of the Year, added: “This season we’ve had some terrible weather on Tour. We’re quite accustomed to coping with rain delays and wild weather.”
For the spectators’ sake, everyone is hoping for a return to the warm sunshine over the last week – but perhaps Catrin Nilsmark and her team might not be too worried if the rain Gods do their stuff.
For those watching the weather – the weekend here by the Oresund is expected to be about 23 degrees celsius (74f) and as for the golf on the course, nearly 100,000 fans expect temperatures to equate to those in the ninth level of Dante’s Inferno!
