(Porthcawl, August 11 2004) Women’s golf in Wales has come on leaps and bounds since the arrival to professional women’s golf of the two Becky’s – Morgan and Brewerton, the Welsh number one and two respectively.

“I’ve had a great season so far,” said the 29-year-old from Monmouth on the eve of the event. “It’s been similar to last year already and it’s great to come back to our home Tour and get the support from the galleries.
“I’ve played the course hundreds of times as an amateur, so I know it well and I’ve had a couple of good finishes here already in this event and it would just be huge to get my first win this week. That would be perfect.
“This is an important event for the Tour and if the weather holds up, it will be a terrific week for both the players and the fans.” Brewerton, in her rookie year as a professional, exploded onto the scene as an amateur in 2003 while Morgan was making good headway in the USA.
The 21-year-old from Abergele finished runner up in two events while still representing the non-paid ranks, at the Tenerife Ladies Open and here where she was denied by Waugh on the last hole. Brewerton turned professional late last year and when she arrived on the Tour in Europe, she repeated her feat of finishing second in Tenerife and went on to post two more top-three finishes at the Spanish Open and KLM Ladies Open in Holland.
“I would have certainly taken that at the start of the season,” admitted Brewerton.
“So far I’ve had a great start to my career and I’ve learned a lot and I think that playing on the LET while I was an amateur has really helped me settle in quickly.
“I’m really looking forward to the week, too. Obviously I have great memories of last year and the course suits my game, so hopefully, I can get myself up there and give the galleries something to cheer about and who knows, maybe I can go one better for them.”
Brewerton will also have another goal in the back of her mind in the guise of the ‘Ryder Cup Wales Rookie of the Year’ race, currently headed by flying Finn Minea Blomqvist who won the OTP Bank Central European Open and finished eighth in the Weetabix Women’s British Open after shooting a record ten under par 62 in the third round.
