Turfgrass®, a world leading golf course consultancy company that specialise in golf development, project management and agronomy, is delighted to be re-appointed as the official supplier of agronomy to the 18th edition of The Solheim Cup, which will be hosted at the luxury golf, hotel and spa destination resort of Finca Cortesin, in southern Spain a year from now; 18th – 24th September, 2023.
Turfgrass® is incredibly proud to be the official agronomists to the European hosting of The Solheim Cup for the past 16 years, with the successful delivery of The 2007 Solheim Cup in Halmstad, Sweden, The 2011 Solheim Cup at Killeen Castle, Ireland, The 2015 Solheim Cup in St. Leon-Rot, Germany and The 2019 Solheim Cup at Gleneagles Hotel, Scotland.
The Solheim Cup alternates between European and American venues every two years, and the host course is chosen by the respective Tour when in their continent or country, Turfgrass® therefore worked closely with the Ladies European Tour who ultimately determined that Finca Cortesin was the best choice for the 2023 tournament.
“We are excited to bring the Solheim Cup to such a high calibre and celebrated resort as Finca Cortesin,” said Julian Mooney, Director of Agronomy at Turfgrass®. “When we consider potential host venues, we look for layouts capable of staging the tournament infrastructure required for such an event, along with a strong match play golf course. From an agronomic perspective, Finca Cortesin, led by Superintendent Ignacio Soto produce tournament standard year round, so realising the playability required for Solheim Cup will be more than attainable.”
Spain, and in particular Andalucía and the Costa del Sol region have extensive experience in hosting world class sports events, however this is the first time that Spain will be hosting The Solheim Cup. This places even greater emphasis on all the individuals and companies involved to guarantee the success of this event on the international stage.
Fortunately, the Turfgrass® team have a 16-year symbiotic relationship with the tournament as highlighted by Tournament Director, Davide Lantos. He said: “It is excellent to be working alongside the Turfgrass® team once again as The Solheim Cup heads to Spain for the first time. Turfgrass® has provided an invaluable and crucial service as the official agronomists at the past five European editions of The Solheim Cup. Working together with the team is vital and we have been highly impressed with their knowledge of tournament preparation, I’m confident they will deliver another excellent service for the event at Finca Cortesin.”
