(A Coruña, Spain May 27 2004) Three rookies on this year’s Robe di Kappa Ladies European Tour lead the way on four under par 68 after the first round of the Union Fenosa Open de España Femenino Xacobeo 2004 at Club de Golf de La Coruña.
Becky Brewerton – lining up a first win? |
“I’m usually a couple behind after the first round or sitting just off the pace and usually come back after the second round and I feel I’ve got a bit of a head start now!”
Brewerton is currently ranked eighth on the LET Order of Merit and in second place in the Bill Johnson Rookie of the Year race behind Sweden’s Linda Wessberg, the runner up behind Cecilia Ekelundh in Portugal.
“I’m loving the season so far. We’re nearly half way through the season and I’ve settled in quickly and my confidence has been high over the last few months, so it’s been a good transition.”
Monke, who turns 27 on Friday, gave herself an early birthday present with a 68, but it was not all plain sailing as she fully admitted it was a scramble on the course.
“I was hitting the driver into the woods a lot and each time, I managed to recover and just happened to make a birdie once in a while,” laughed Monke, who is 25th on the Order of Merit in her rookie year.
“It’s been a good season so far and I’ve managed to play in all four events. I made the cut both times in Australia, but during Tenerife, I got hit by a ball on my wrist and I didn’t have a great week there.
