THE EVIAN CHAMPIONSHIP WILL BE PLAYED IN 2021

Due to the situation brought about by the world health crisis, The Evian Championship’s organising committee has announced that the 2020 tournament cannot be held this year.

The ongoing uncertainty concerning the opening of borders, in particular with Asia and the USA, poses a major risk to the organisation of a competition, which in less than eight weeks, has to welcome 120 players from around the world and from over 30 countries. Even if in France restrictions concerning outdoor public events seem to be gradually easing, the LPGA and The Evian Championship’s organising committee have to recognise that the conditions for a safe and relaxed event that lives up to the expectations of the public, players, organizers and their partners are not in place. On top of this, as the sporting calendar does not allow for a rescheduling of the date (which was already postponed a few weeks ago from July to August), the tournament will be played in July 2021.

“We have waited for as long as organisational issues allow to make this decision with Mike Whan and the LPGA. But unfortunately, it was unavoidable in view of the situation with regards to US travel to Continental Europe. Our top priority is of course to ensure everyone stays healthy and safe. All of our teams are very affected by the forced cancellation of our Major, but we must not lose sight of what matters most. Firstly, I think of the huge disappointment on the part of the players, who have created quasi-family ties with the tournament. I hope for them that the AIG Women’s British Open will go ahead. My thoughts also go to our loyal spectators, our volunteers, our fans all over the world, the media and our sponsors who support us during these difficult times too”, underlines Franck Riboud, Chairman of The Evian Championship. “We are also mindful that The Evian Championship plays an important role in the economy and exposure of the town of Evian and an entire region, from which they will not benefit this year. This unprecedented situation forces us to look at the future differently. We nevertheless continue this year to help the charities supported by the tournament and are already committed to the next edition in 2021 to fully rediscover the values and the spirit of a family celebration, the conviviality and emotions that have made our Major unique for 25 years. I would like to thank both the organizing teams, who have worked right up to the end in an endeavor to maintain our event and our greenkeeper and his team, who despite the circumstances, have prepared an exceptional course for the tournament and the golfing season.”
