Stupples on course for maiden victory

(Surfers Paradise, February 27 2004) England’s Karen Stupples carded a five under par to tack on to her opening 68 and takes a two shot lead heading into the third round of the $Aus800,000 ANZ Ladies Masters at Royal Pines GC on Australia’s Gold Coast.

Anne-Marie Knight – a colourful character

Knight, who will be playing with Stupples in round three, had one of the “finest rounds” her life as she carded three birdies, a solitary bogey and eagle two’s at the par fours seventh and 18th.

At the seventh, Knight hit a little nine-iron from 127-yards and at the tricky final hole, she fired a five-iron from 170 and saw it roll up and drop in.

“It was an unbelievable round of golf,” said Knight. “To get two eagles in a round of golf is quite some feat, but to get two, both of them on par fours in pretty unusual.

“I felt pretty solid out there today in the wind and holed a few good putts.”

Sixty six players made the halfway cut which fell at three over par and missing out on the weekend were some big names in women’s golf including US Open champion Hilary Lunke, Solheim Cup players Paula Marti and Elisabeth Esterl.
