SIMMERMACHER FEELING BACK TO HER OLD SELF AFTER TOUGH YEAR

Maggie Simmermacher

Magdalena Simmermacher finished the year on a high regaining her Ladies European Tour (LET) card for 2025.

The Argentinian star struggled with her form in 2024, playing 13 LET events and missing the cut in all of them.

Simmermacher knew she had to make changes in her game, so she went back to Argentina to reset and change her team.

“The last year has been very tough,” she said. “The beginning especially, I just had some things going on and I glad I took the time to realise I wasn’t going in the right direction with the clubs and my mental game also wasn’t in the right place. I took some time off and went home.

“It was a very tough decision, but smart to do it and go back home and reorganise all my team. I changed my swing coach. I changed my psychologist. I employed a physical trainer.

“It was such a tough part of the year, but it was very exciting to see what was going to come and working on things. I think I let the fear out and said make a change and we’ll see, if not it doesn’t matter, but where I am right now, I’m not going forward.”

Simmermacher first came to LET Q-School in 2020, when she earned her full card which she had kept until 2024.

The Olympian finished sixth in the Order of Merit in 2022, and has finished as a runner-up twice with 15 top 10 finishes in total.

She continued: “My first Q-School was definitely different. I didn’t have any status anywhere but then how I performed on the LET in the last couple of years, how well I played, and then I went to the LPGA.

“This year has been very tough, that part specifically to leave that aside and tell myself it’s okay to go to Q-School and I will see how I can do and not have regrets if I’m playing good or bad. That era has gone, I didn’t want that anymore, so I’m free again.

“This year, I felt more like Maggie who came to Q-School four years ago, just seeing what I can do and trusting myself. This new coach has said he wanted to bring Maggie back. He didn’t want to change anything, he wants to give me confidence and see me believe in myself because you’re very good at golf. He wants me to just trust myself again and I will be able to do it.”

Simmermacher has a new team now with Mariano Scalise as her physical trainer, Maria Eliçagaray as her psychologist and Martin Corba as her new golf coach.

The 28-year-old attended Lalla Aicha Q-School with her dad by her side for support and a friend on the bag.

She produced rounds of 72-74-69-71-66 to finish in a share of 16th place and secure Category 12 status for 2025.

She added: “I think in my toughest moments I like to have my dad here because it was a very long two weeks. I had to play Pre-Q which I haven’t done before, so it was something new for me.

“I really wanted to be comfortable and be with someone who doesn’t care if I do well or bad, he’s always supporting me. We can go the supermarket; we can have dinner, and we can talk about things that aren’t golf which is very important for me.

“I have to thank my caddie, he is a friend of mine, he gave me confidence as a player and knew what to do as my caddie. We’ve worked very well together. Thank you to all my family back home for cheering and sending so many messages.

“Four days ago, I already felt like me again. The second day of Pre-Q, I felt like I was back. I hadn’t shot a low round yet, but I told my coach that I was back, and I will play well. Once the birdies started to sink in,I then got my confidence and thought I know I can do it.

“It’s been a good journey recently, and I have a mental coach for the last couple of months and he has helped me so much. I knew I had my game in the back of my mind and whenever I got nervous, I could still perform, so I think he’s done a great job.”
