Scottish Golf launch new Solheim Cup Ambassador Programme ahead of 2019 event at Gleneagles

Scottish Golf today unveiled its new Club Ambassador Programme as part of the organisation’s ongoing commitment to The 2019 Solheim Cup, the biggest event in women’s golf and one of the biggest in women’s sport.

Working in partnership with VisitScotland and the Scottish Government, who are leading on the delivery of The 2019 Solheim Cup, Scottish Golf’s new Club Ambassador Programme will encourage all golf club members across Scotland to get involved in leading local activities to promote the event ahead of its return to the home of golf in September.

With registration now open for the new initiative, Ambassadors will receive support from Scottish Golf to engage with fellow club members ahead of this year’s event.

Ambassadors will be responsible for:
• Organising and delivering Solheim Cup events within the club
• Promoting the Solheim Cup to fellow club members
• Promoting opportunities to buy tickets
• Be the key contact within the club for all things Solheim Cup

All Ambassadors will be rewarded with an excellent benefits package which will include two tickets to The 2019 Solheim Cup as well as the chance to win Club visit from Team Europe Captain, Catriona Matthew with the Cup. Other benefits include access to the PING pavilion at Gleneagles during the event.

Speaking at today’s launch, Team Europe Captain, Catriona Matthew said: “I was excited to hear about Scottish Golf’s Solheim Cup Club Ambassador Programme. It is a great way to ensure that members of all the various clubs in Scotland have the information they need in order to make it as easy as possible for them to come to the Solheim Cup. Local support will be really important to us in our bid to win the Cup back from the USA, so I am looking forward to this Programme rolling out across the country and I would encourage club members to register their interest today.”

Scottish Golf’s Women and Young People Development Manager, Carol Harvey was also at today’s launch event and is looking forward to working closely with those interested in becoming an Ambassador: “Today’s launch marks an exciting milestone ahead of this year’s Solheim Cup. With the event just months away, we are seeking applications from club members across the country who want to join us in sharing the excitement of The 2019 Solheim Cup.

Ambassadors will not only help promote the Solheim Cup with fun, social activities at their club, but they will also have the opportunity to experience the excitement of the event first-hand with every Ambassador receiving 2 complimentary tickets to The 2019 Solheim Cup.”

Fiona Maciver, who will take on the role as Solheim Cup Ambassador at North Berwick Golf Club said: “We are absolutely delighted to be hosting the formal launch of The 2019 Solheim Cup Ambassador Programme. Not only does the initiative allow Ambassadors to engage with Club members, it will also promote the event within clubs around the country to ensure that the home supporters have the biggest presence and loudest voice during the tournament. It is especially pleasing for North Berwick Golf Club to support Catriona during her Captaincy and we wish her and the team the very best of luck to win the Cup back from the USA.”

Joe FitzPatrick, Minister for Public Health, Sport and Wellbeing, said: “I welcome the Solheim Cup Ambassador Programme and am sure it will be a tremendous success. I am confident the Programme will inspire many thousands of golf club members across Scotland to come to Gleneagles in September and help create a fantastic atmosphere to complement the world-class sporting competition, thereby promoting Scotland as the Home of Golf and the perfect stage for major events.”

Scottish Golf CEO, Andrew McKinlay, added: “Today’s announcement demonstrates a commitment by Scottish Golf and our member clubs to promote The Solheim Cup and help build anticipation for what will be an epic contest. We will work with clubs to provide proactive, on-the-ground, awareness for members and find innovative ways to build up to the world’s greatest women’s golf team event. We are delighted that PING are also lending their support in enhancing the rewards package with some great
prizes and tickets to the event.”

The Solheim Cup gives us all an opportunity to watch world-class golf on our doorstep and there is no greater role model than Catriona to show what can be achieved with dedication and hard work.”
