S&C COACHES GET MAJOR EXPERIENCE WITH LETPI AT AIG WOMEN’S OPEN

Two promising female coaches were part of the Ladies European Tour Performance Institute (LETPI) team at the 2025 AIG Women’s Open held at Royal Porthcawl.

The gym on site was staffed by LETPI Strength & Conditioning Lead Fiona Scott alongside Fiona Jordan, Senior Physical Preparation Coach at the SportScotland Institute of Sport, and Becky Scott, a private S&C coach who also serves as Athletic Development Lead and Head of Golf at St Swithun’s School.

Thanks to a collaboration between The R&A and the UK Strength & Conditioning Association’s (UKSCA), Jordan was the recipient of the UKSCA’s Richard Holmes Award for Emerging S&C Coach of the Year in August 2023 and got the opportunity to work at the AIG Women’s Open.

Meanwhile, Scott – who grew up in the golf industry and has experienced many roles over the last 18 years – applied for the second S&C assistant coach position at this year’s Major Championship held in Wales.

Throughout the week, both coaches worked alongside the LETPI team assisting players in the gym with their training, warm-ups, any prehabilitation/rehabilitation, weekly schedule and ensuring they were able to perform to the best of their ability.

“I had a very positive experience as part of the player services team at the AIGWO, and there was very positive feedback from the players about the level of professional provision and facilities across player services at the event,” said the Richard Holmes Award recipient.

“I attended the AIGWO which was great to experience the professional sport environment at a major in contrast to my usual work in Olympic & Paralympic sport. It was essential to keep the environment calm and welcoming to all the athletes under the pressure of the competition, which we did well as a team.

“There was good learning and collaboration across player services colleagues, specifically within the LETPI, to develop understanding of the challenges of the professional environment, the tournament schedule for the athletes, maintaining physical performance and reducing injury risk to common golf related injuries.”

Scott, who passed her UKSCA exams in 2022, explained: “I loved it!  The whole event from start to finish gave me so many different experiences. Early in the week gave us a great chance to introduce ourselves to the players and chat about the gym space and how best to optimise it to what the players require.

“From then on it was a chance to see how different players approach their training throughout the week as the tournament progressed. It was all a great learning experience for me as my first professional sports event.

“I really valued having both Fiona [Scott] and the rest of the LETPI team around to be able to chat to, bounce ideas from, let conversations flow about training, programming, tournament logistics etc.”

One of the goals of the LETPI was to introduce a dedicated platform to support women working in health and performance roles, aiming to foster gender equality and empower women professionals, enabling them to excel and make a significant impact in the elite sports industry.

LETPI S&C Lead Scott said: “It was a pleasure having Fiona Jordan and Becky Scott assisting the LETPI at the AIGWO this year. Not only did it mean that there was S&C provision at all times of the day and that the gym was open for players to utilise around their golf schedules, but it was also great to be able to nurture and drive diversity within the profession.”
