Luca Thompson has had an eventful start to life on the Ladies European Tour (LET) carding an opening round of 67 (-4) at the Ford Women’s NSW Open.
The Welshwoman, who is making her professional debut on the LET, only got into the tournament late last week and so had a quick turnaround in making the trip Down Under.
With heavy rain on the first day, play was suspended with Thompson finishing her first round on the second day of action at Wollongong Golf Club.
However, despite a chaotic start to the week, the rookie rolled in a remarkable nine birdies during her first round to sit T3 after 18 holes.
“To be honest, it was an absolute nightmare [getting over here],” she said. “First, we couldn’t get a visa, then we managed to get one while I was on the plane because I was going to stay in Bali first.
“Then I changed my flight to Australia, got to Doha, was delayed 18 hours and ended up not getting here until Monday morning feeling very jet lagged. So yeah, it’s really good.
“I’m just a bit baffled at the minute. We had English weather, so that’s always helpful. It felt like being at home. It was just really nice having my brother [Woody] on the bag.
“That’s his first time on the bag too, because he wanted to come out to Australia. It just flowed the whole time. My wedge game was really good. I think on this course, you can putt and use your wedges well.
“I appreciate this weather. All winter, I’ve just had frozen hands, so this is lovely. Even yesterday I was like, ‘this is fine. I’ll take this’. It’s great. My first time in Australia. I’m loving it, it’s incredible.
“I just want to stay shot by shot really. How I like to play it is just look at the next shot I’ve got on the first tee. I can’t control anything until I hit that shot.”
