ROOKIE REPORT: HELSINGBORG OPEN

April Angurasaranee

Last week saw the first of two weeks in Sweden for the Ladies European Tour (LET) with the Helsingborg Open returning to the calendar for the first time since 2015.

It’s a busy stretch on the road for the LET with eight consecutive events to kickstart the summer, but the Tour is halfway through this run with four events completed and four to go.

And it was another big week for our rookies with plenty of them in action across the three days at Allerum Golf Club.

After the first round, it was New Zealander Momoka Kobori who was the leading rookie having shot 70 (-2) with Thailand’s April Angurasaranee just one shot further back.

On Saturday, it was Angurasaranee who continued her fine form producing a round of 70 (-2) to squeeze into the top 10 in the leaderboard.

The cut fell at +4 with 69 players making it through to the final round of action and the Thai teenager was joined by nine other rookies with Renate Grimstad, Nastasia Nadaud, Yuri Onishi, Trichat Cheenglab, Elena Colombo, Sara Kjellker, Dolnapa Zukphokinvanich, Kobori, and Hanee Song playing all three rounds.

After a final round of 69 (-3), Angurasaranee put herself firmly in the top 10 finishing in a tie for sixth place on six-under-par and she also booked her spot in next week’s tournament.

Norway’s Grimstad carded a final round of 68 (-4) to secure her best-ever finish on the LET as she ended the week in T10 while Sweden’s Kjellker finished T18.

In the 2023 Rookie of the Year standings, Germany’s Patricia Isabel Schmidt – winner of the Belgian Ladies Open – continues to lead the way with 563.48 points but Angurasaranee has closed the gap in second place and now has 518.83 points.

Next up for our rookies is another week in Sweden, this time at the Volvo Car Scandinavian Mixed which is being held at Ullna Golf Club.
