Part 3 of 3
In this review of the 2014 LET season, we have already traversed 14 tournaments across four continents. Here we recap the last six tournaments, from the Aberdeen Asset Management Ladies Scottish Open in late August to the Cell C Women’s South African Open.
Heading into the back nine of the season, England’s Trish Johnson showed the way when she collected her 19th LET title at the Aberdeen Asset Management Ladies Scottish Open on the Fidra Course at Archerfield Links in East Lothian. At the age of 48, Johnson became the oldest winner in the history of the LET, overtaking Dame Laura Davies.
At the next event, the Helsingborg Open at Vasatorps Golf Club in Sweden, Dutch star Dewi-Claire Schreefel, 28, fulfilled years of promise when she earned her first career title after racing seven strokes clear of the defending champion Rebecca Artis.
At the Evian Championship in France, South Korean teenager Hyo-Joo Kim, 19, became another first time winner when she shot an opening round of 61 (-10), the lowest ever round in a major, and held steady to become the third youngest winner of a women’s major.
At the Tenerife Open de Espana at the gorgeous Golf Costa Adeje in the Canary Islands, South African Connie Chen, 21, collected her maiden title in late September.
Leading LET rookie Amy Boulden almost became a first time winner at the Lacoste Ladies Open de France, but was pipped by the experienced Solheim Cup player Azahara Muñoz of Spain, who birdied the last two holes to keep the title.
The Cell C South African Women’s Open at San Lameer Golf Club in Kwa-Zulu Natal was another dramatic affair, full of weather delays and lead changes, but in the end, Lee-Anne Pace proved a popular home winner when she emerged from a play-off against Holly Clyburn.
With just four events remaining in the 2014 LET season, the race for the order of merit, rookie of the year and tour cards is still wide open. With two events in China followed by another in India, the season is all set for a gripping climax in Dubai.
