Part 2 of 3
In the first of our three part review of the 2014 LET season, we recalled the first six events of the season in Oceania, Asia and Africa. Here we look at the early part of the season and the events played from Holland in late May through to Pilsen in early August.
Scotland’s Kylie Walker began her golden summer with a maiden win at the Deloitte Ladies Open in Holland, at The International in Amsterdam. Just seven weeks later, on route to her second victory at the Ladies German Open presented by Marriott, at Wörthsee Golf Club, Walker fired three straight rounds of 64 to set a new LET 54-hole record of 259, 24-under-par.
She was not the summer’s only first-time winner. The trend continued when Swede Camilla Lennarth, 26, secured the Allianz Ladies Slovak Open presented by RESPECT at Gray Bear Golf Club in the beautiful Low Tatras Mountains.
It was a happy return to the winner’s circle for Florentyna Parker when she won her second LET title at the Ladies Italian Open at Golf Club de Perugia, with a memorable albatross on the par-5 14th hole during her last round.
Next, South Korean, IK Kim, took the honours at the ISPS HANDA Ladies European Masters at the LET’s beautiful headquarters at Buckinghamshire Golf Club in England.
Then, American Mo Martin, 31, won her maiden LET title on the biggest stage of all. At the Ricoh Women’s British Open at Royal Birkdale, Martin recorded a stunning eagle on the final hole for a closing 72 – the joint lowest round on a blustery final day – for a total of 287, one-under-par, which was enough to see off the challenge of Shanshan Feng and Suzann Pettersen.
We’ve already touched on the Ladies German Open presented by Marriott, which was dominated by Walker up until the final round, but after starting the last day with a six stroke lead, Walker was eventually caught by Hull, who fired a 65. Two months after earning her first Ladies European Tour title in a play-off, Walker won her second with a par on the first extra hole at Golfclub Wörthsee in stormy conditions after a week of extremely hot temperatures and wall to wall sunshine.
At the Sberbank Golf Masters in Pilsen, Czech Republic, it was the turn of 27-year-old Frenchwoman Julie Greciet to enter the LET winner’s circle as she overcame a wrist injury to hold off Lee-Anne Pace at Golf Park Plzeň – Dýšina. That made it eight first time winners from 14 events so far.
