Days after making headlines in Spain Helen Briem was her usual calm and collective self ahead of the Lacoste Ladies Open de France as she looks towards a sixth win of the season.
2024 has been nothing short of remarkable for the 19-year-old German who made history earlier this month when she landed a fourth LET Access Series (LETAS) title of the year at the Rose Ladies Open – the most ever in one calendar year on the feeder circuit.
If that was not enough, Briem made even bigger headlines last week when she secured her Ladies European Tour (LET) card in style by winning the La Sella Open in Alicante.
“It’s been a pretty good season so far,” the former World No 1 amateur said understatedly. “Both as an amateur and a professional. I’m really happy about it.
“We said at the beginning of the season the intention was to get an LET card through the LET Access Series. So we were planning how many events it takes. But I ended up playing five to secure my card. So that was incredible. It gave me the opportunity to play some LET events and I took advantage of it.“
Brilliant Briem fired a bogey-free final round of 66 (-6) to win the 2024 La Sella Open pipping French star Pauline Roussin-Bouchard to the title. With the victory, Briem moves into the LET winner’s category giving her access into all events for the remainder of the season.
“It was pretty special,” the German said. “The course was very challenging but I think overall I played very solid golf. I made few mistakes and I think that’s the key. I made a lot of birdies.
“I try to stay calm but I do get nervous sometimes. I try to not show it! But yeah, most of the time it is ok. I’ve been in this situation a few times now. Especially in the big junior events. I know how to deal with pressure and last week it worked pretty well.”
As for this week at Golf Barriere in Deauville, Briem tees up as one of seven winners from 2024 where she will be applying the same mindset that took her from the top of the amateur ranks to LET stardom.
“I try to win every event,” she said “It’s a totally different course this week and the weather is very different. It’s pretty cold and rainy. So we’ll see. It’s basically carry golf so we’ll see how it goes.”
Briem gets her Lacoste Ladies Open de France challenge underway tomorrow afternoon at 13:03. She tees up alongside Australia’s Kirsten Rudgeley and Sweden’s Moa Folke.
