Rd 1 #AIGWBO: Major Under Way at Woburn

The 43rd edition of the AIG Women’s British Open is under way at Woburn Golf Club. The 144-player field includes 49 of the Rolex Ranking top 50, with players representing 26 nations and 27 Major champions, who between them have won 46 Majors.

It is the 11th time Woburn has hosted the championship and the second time on the Marquess’ Course, following on from 2016 when Thailand’s Ariya Jutanugarn was victorious.

England’s Charlotte Thomas struck the first tee shot at 6.30am, while the 2019 Women’s New South Wales Open champion Meghan MacLaren, who joined Woburn Golf Club in April, teed off in the second group at 6.41am.

Dame Laura Davies, making her 39th consecutive British Open appearance, started in the third group at 6.52am in the company of the recent La Reserva de Sotogrande Invitational winner Celine Herbin and the 2017 champion In-Kyung Kim.

Another Woburn member, Charley Hull, started at 7.36am, followed by Solheim Cup hopefuls Anne Van Dam at 7.47am and Mel Reid at 8.09am.

England’s Georgia Hall begins her defence of the title she won so memorably at Royal Lytham last year at 12.16pm and two groups before, at 11.54am, it’s the 2009 champion and Solheim Cup captain Catriona Matthew.

This year’s tournament is also the penultimate qualifying event in the race to qualify for the European Solheim Cup team, with a number of players still looking to secure their spot in Catriona Matthew’s European side for Gleneagles.

Others to look out for include the new world No.1 Jin-Young Ko who is looking to win her third major of the season following wins in the ANA Inspiration and Evian Championship on Sunday (12.38pm) and the world No.2 Sung Hyun Park (7.03am).

Live coverage on Sky Sports begins from 11am until 6pm over the first two rounds and from midday to 7pm over the weekend, with daily highlights looking back at the best of each day’s action.
