“I know how much it would mean to Karrie to make history in her home country. But I’m not apologising. I’ve lost play-offs in the past but today it was my turn.” Annika Sorenstam stops Karrie Webb from winning a record fifth successive Australian Masters. With victory at the fourth extra hole, the Swede collected the first of her 13 titles in 2002.
“Hats off to her. She hung in there and never faltered. I can hardly believe that’s she’s just 20.” Karrie Webb beats a dogged Suzann Pettersen at the first extra hole in a play-off for the Australian Open.
“I’ll be retiring relatively soon. But if results are good and I’m still enjoying it, then who knows how long I might keep playing?” At the start of 2002, Raquel Carriedo pondered her future. She won the Tenerife Open, finished fourth in the US Open and played in the Solheim Cup – could be a few years before she hangs up her spikes.
Brooky didn’t spank the sponsor! |
“When I won for a first time (1998 Austrian Open), I stood up at the prize giving and said: ‘I want to SPANK the sponsor’. The other players rolled about laughing and I thought ‘I never want to do this again.'” A relieved Lynnette Brooky overcomes a psychological barrier to win her second Evian Tour title at the French Open.
“I’m not a big fan of play-offs. But this was a great confidence booster.” Laura Davies wins Norwegian Masters. Since joining the Tour in 1985, Laura has only had one season (2000) when she didn’t win a title.
“I’ve got to play that big girl? That’s not fair!” The diminutive Ana Larraneta is as surprised as anyone to find herself in a play-off against Laura Davies for the Norwegian Masters. She loses to a birdie at the second extra hole, but adds: “Laura was really nice to me (going into the play-off). She really helped me and I’m so happy.”
“I’m desperate to win a British Open. I’ve finished second three times. Coming from Europe, it has always been a huge event.” Annika Sorenstam declares one of her 2003 goals. But at Turnberry, she missed the cut!
“This is one of the greatest moments of my career.” Karrie Webb emulates childhood hero Greg Norman by winning a British Open at Turnberry. “To win the first women’s major to be held in Scotland is a dream come true.”
“I’m overjoyed. It’s always special to win in Sweden.” Annika Sorenstam delights the home crowd by winning Compaq Open at Vasatorp in Helsingborg.

“They’re only borrowing it.” European Solheim Cup Captain Dale Reid sends out a message to the United States team.
“I didn’t want to come off at the 13th, I was getting my ass kicked out there so I thought ****-it!” An adrenaline pumped Suzann Pettersen accidentally drops the F-Bomb live on National television after amazingly halving her singles match from five holes down with five to play as her opponent Michelle Redman completely capitulates!
“Scalpel please Nobby,” England’s Laura Davies requests her sand wedge for her second shot at the opening hole of the Saturday Fourballs after driving her ball straight into the greenside bunker at a par four!
