The Catalonia Ladies Masters which takes place next week at Golf Platja de Pals will feature two days of Pro-Am tournaments on the 20 and 21st September.
The tournament organisers have decided to pay homage to the late golfer Maria Garcia Estrada, in a display of solidarity against her battle with cancer.
Maria Garcia Estrada died on 2nd September 2005, and organisers have named the Pro Am, ‘Pro Am de Maria Garcia Estrada’ in her honour.
Maria Garcia Estrada was a popular member of the golfing community of Spain. She was the Under 11 National Champion and the Under 14 World Champion in 1995 and 1996. She also represented Spain in the European team Championships in 1997 with other Spanish players including Paula Marti.
Maria, who was 24 years old, was first diagnosed with Sarcoma-Carcinosarcoma (Cancer) at the end of February this year. This type of cancer is very uncommon and extremely difficult to fight. Since she was diagnosed, Maria took great interest in a number of initiatives concerning the fight against cancer and she was informed of the Pro Am initiative. According to her wishes, the Catalonia Ladies Masters organisation in conjunction with the Spanish Association against Cancer has dedicated the Pro-Am to her in a display of solidarity with the institutions, media, players, VIP’s and celebrities, in the fight against cancer.
