A final-hole bogey denied Matthew a chance at a playoff, leaving both Pettersen and Lincicome needing birdies at the reachable par-five, to take the championship into extra time against Pressel. Both failed with their birdie attempts and Pressel was rewarded with the historic win, Rolex First Time Winner recognition, and the honour of a champions leap into the lake adjacent to the 18th green. “This is a dream to be out here and to win a major championship, and especially with my first win.” a tearful Pressel said in the press conference. Having lost her mother at an early age and having been supported by her grandparents ever since, Pressel’s emotions overflowed. “I know my mother is always with me. And I’m sure she’s proud of me, as my grandparents are. And I mean (crying) — sorry. I would just like to thank my grandparents for everything they’ve done for me and all their support and their love. And I’m sure they’re just as happy as I am. So thank you very much.”
Despite a promising start, defending Champion Karrie Webb was unable to ignite the flame which saw her win in spectacular fashion last year, finishing in a tie for 20th place at five-over-par, alongside the European number one Laura Davies.
