Perfect start for Davies at perfect venue

(Evian-les-Bains, France July 21 2004) England’s Laura Davies got off to the perfect start at one of the most perfect venues in women’s golf as she carded an eight under par 64 to take the first round lead at the $2.5million Evian Masters at the foothills of the French Alps, in this glorious setting high above the banks of Lake Geneva.

Annika – solid start

“I’m very happy with the way I played today, it was very solid,” said the Swede. “That is a good start wherever you go and today I was patient all day and took advantage of the par fives.”

Brooky, who has three top tens to her credit this season, admitted she was not long off the tee like her playing partners Kelly Robbins and Cecilia Ekelundh of Sweden, but the Kiwi outscored the pair which included three birdies on her closing holes.

“I played with Kelly at Yarra Yarra a couple of years ago and she shot eight under and I shot seven under, so today, I was really happy to be paired with her and I got my own back a little,” said Brooky.

“I was 30-yards behind them all day long and playing my approach shots first, but I didn’t try to force anything, I just concentrated on my tempo and kept it smooth and it worked for me.”

And Prieto, a happy-go-lucky Spaniard noted for her deft short game, posted the early lead with seven birdies, despite starting with a sloppy bogey at the opening hole where she hooked her first drive at the Evian Masters left into the trees.
