(Tytherington, Cheshire March 28 2003) Among the most scenic and historical locations on the Ladies European Tour circuit is Salamanca, the ‘Spanish City of learning’ in the Castilla y Leon region of Spain.
And today, the Ladies European Tour confirmed that Campo de Golf de Salamanca will host the 2003 Open de España Femenino from May 29 to June 1.
Karine Icher from France won the inaugural event last season after a dramatic final day when she defeated the local favourite and incumbent European number one Raquel Carriedo from Zaragoza.
Ian Randell, chief executive of the Ladies European Tour was delighted to confirm a return to one of Spain’s most beautiful cities.
“Campo de Golf de Salamanca proved itself to be a fantastic venue last season and provided a first-class golf course,” said Randell. “Our players are relishing the opportunity of returning to this beautiful city and our sincere thanks go to the Royal Federation de Espana for their hard work in ensuring the continued success of the Open de Espana Feminino”
Salamanca is perhaps best known for having the oldest University in Spain and one of the oldest in Europe. The University and the Plaza Mayor lined with its street cafés give a perfect ambiance to the town. And as the city is untouched in its architectural purity it was recently declared a “World Heritage Site” by UNESCO.
