Olivia Cowan needs no less than a runner-up finish in this week’s Ladies European Thailand Championship if she is to move into the top five on the LET order of merit and seal a place in The Evian Championship next month, but she is ready to shake off the bridesmaid tag and seal her first LET title.
Speaking at Phoenix Gold Golf and Country Club in Pattaya on Wednesday, where local players Atthaya Thitikul and Kanyalak Preedasuttijit won the first two editions of the event, the 23-year-old from Hamburg, ranked eighth on the LET, said: “All of us Europeans are in good form, so hopefully we’ll have a European champion this week.
“I’m playing well and I’m just hoping for that win and to go one step further. I know it’s in there and I have to keep grinding and stay patient.
“The greens are a lot softer than the first two years so that will definitely help my game and I think this year will be really good.”
Cowan has her best friend Anna on the bag, who caddied for her when she finished tied for second in the Omega Dubai Moonlight Classic last month and she added: “She’s my good luck charm. She doesn’t play golf so it’s a bit more relaxed. We went to the night market and we want to go to an island and on a motorbike this week. We’re going to go to Bangkok on Sunday night to do some sight-seeing early next week.
“I really like coming to Thailand. The food is really good and people are always really nice. The weather is great, nice and hot and the course is in great condition, so it’s always a fun week.”
The 2019 Ladies European Thailand Golf Championship takes place at Phoenix Gold Golf and Country Club in Pattaya from June 20-23. The tournament is co-sanctioned by the Ladies European Tour (LET) and Thai Ladies Professional Golf Association (Thai LPGA) and offers a total prize money of 300,000 Euros (approximately Bt11 million). It will be competed in a 72-hole stroke play format for four days. Only top 60 players, after 36 holes, will proceed to the weekend rounds.
Live TV coverage of the event can be followed on TrueSport HD3 on June 22 and 23 between 1pm – 4pm. Tickets for spectators are priced at Bt100 per day and are available at the public entrance to the course. Those under 18 and over 60 with relevant proof of age are exempt from course entrance fees.
