European players and captains (from l to r) Annika Sorenstam, Caroline Hedwall, Anna Nordqvist, Charley Hull, Liselotte Neumann, Caroline Masson, Pernilla Lindberg, Carlota Ciganda, Dewi Claire Schreefel and Gwladys Nocera were at Colorado Golf Club the morning of Tuesday, July 2, to meet with Colorado media and promote the Solheim Cup, which runs from Aug. 13-18. |
Approximately 35 members of Colorado media outlets enjoyed a breakfast and press opportunity with European Captain Liselotte Neumann, Assistant Captain Annika Sorenstam and several potential members of Team Europe at Colorado Golf Club Tuesday.
Neumann, Sorenstam, nearly a dozen players from around Europe and Ladies European Tour staff members had been in Parker, Colo., for a practice session and planning meetings at CGC, the host of this summer’s Solheim Cup, which will Aug. 13-18. The captains and players were interviewed by television, radio and print media outlets, and some players participated in a “Twitter takeover” where they answered fans’ questions about the upcoming event.
Following a short press conference, where Neumann and Sorenstam fielded questions from the crowd, players and media participated in a chipping contest. Participants were faced with a downhill 43-yard shot from the grass at the back of the CGC clubhouse down to one of the facility’s putting greens.
No media members were able to get their balls to come to rest inside the four-foot ring around the hole, and Dewi Claire Schreefel from the Netherlands was the only pro to accomplish the feat. Sorenstam’s shot came to rest six feet from the hole, plenty close enough for the Hall of Famer to make a birdie if given the chance.
In addition to Schreefel, European players Anna Nordqvist, Caroline Hedwall and Pernilla Lindberg of Sweden, Carlota Ciganda of Spain, Caroline Masson of Germany, France’s Gwladys Nocera and England’s Charley Hull attended the media event.
It will serve as one of the team’s final official visits to Colorado Golf Club before the three-day match play event begins in 45 days. Neumann and U.S. Captain Meg Mallon will make their captain’s picks live on the Golf Channel and Sky Sports on Sunday, Aug. 4, following the RICOH Women’s British Open on the Old Course, St. Andrews, in Scotland and the teams will then be set.
European Solheim Cup Team Captain Liselotte Neumann, left, helped Danielle Grant of Denver’s Channel 9 NBC affiliate kick off an early morning weather report live from Colorado Golf Club on Tuesday as part of Team Europe’s official media day. |
