Ladies European Tour rookie, Alice Hewson, is set to make her Aberdeen Standard Investments Ladies Scottish Open debut this week at The Renaissance Club in North Berwick, as the LET returns to play for the first time since she won the Investec South African Women’s Open in March.
Hewson, who hails from Hemel Hempstead, England, turned pro last year off the back of a glittering amateur career that saw her represent GB&I in the Curtis Cup (2016, 2018) and capture the European Ladies Amateur (2019) and is already making big strides on the professional circuit.
Besides her victory in her first LET event at the Investec South African Women’s Open in March, giving her a 100 per cent winning record on the LET so far in 2020, the 22-year-old has been honing her practice at home during lockdown and keeping tournament sharp in the Rose Ladies Series events, recently finishing sixth on the Order of Merit, posting four top-10 finishes from seven starts. Most notably, winning the Grand Final with scores of 67 and 70 (-5) at North Hants and the Berkshire to head off seasoned campaigners and Solheim Cup stars, Charley Hull and Georgia Hall.
Looking ahead to her first ASI Ladies Scottish Open and first co-sanctioned tournament with the LPGA, Hewson commented:
“I’m extremely excited to get going, I’m pleased I was able to shake off some of the rust during the last few weeks ahead of what is effectively back-to-back majors for me. I had a taste of this sort of field as an amateur last year in the AIG Women’s British Open and I’m intrigued to see how far I’ve come since this time last year.”
As per previous years, The Aberdeen Standard Investments Ladies Scottish Open will deliver one of the strongest line-ups of the season, with the144-player field ensuring Hewson has her work cut out as she bids to claim the winner’s slice of the $1.5million prize fund.
The star-studded list of world-class talent includes no less than 15 major winners with 24 majors between them as well as 27 Solheim Cup players with more than 100 appearances, but this hasn’t put Hewson off.
“I am looking forward to learning as much as I can and I’ve organised a pretty stacked practice schedule with the likes of Carlota Ciganda, Bronte Law and Lydia Ko. I have even managed to get my name alongside Catriona Matthew, which will be an amazing learning experience.”
Also making her debut this week is perhaps the hottest player in the world right now, Danielle Kang, who is fresh off back-to-back LPGA victories. She enters the week as the highest-ranked player in the field at number two in the Rolex Rankings and is joined by Japan’s Nasa Hataoka (5) and Australia’s Minjee Lee (8) as the other top ten ranked competitors.
