KYRIACOU AIMING FOR THE TOP HEADING INTO THE FINAL DAY OF THE AIG WOMEN’S OPEN

Steph Kyriacou

Australia’s Steph Kyriacou has had a solid week at Muirfield shooting rounds of 70, 68 and 70 in the first three days of the AIG Women’s Open.

With 18 holes remaining, the 21-year-old sits in a share of sixth place on five-under-par and is nine shots behind leader Ashleigh Buhai.

Kyriacou got off to a flying start on Saturday with three birdies in her opening five holes, but soon made back-to-back bogeys on seven and eight.

She made a further bogey on 14 but made up for it with a birdie on the 17th to seal her place in the top 10 after 54 holes.

“It is windier than I expected,” she said. “The practise rounds were so nice. The wind is a bit tougher than back home but that’s links golf. It is like home, but again, home is easier because you know the track. It’s way colder – I’m wearing three layers and I’m still freezing.

“I started pretty well. I was three-under through five and I made a couple soft bogeys which killed the momentum. But I didn’t make too many mistakes, and the back nine I find harder. So, I just didn’t give myself many close chances and had to scramble a bit more and just made a birdie on 17.”

But with one round remaining, the two-time LET winner knows she will have to be aggressive if she wants a chance at glory.

“I will definitely be more aggressive,” she added. “I’m a few shots back. I mean, it’s not impossible to win but it’s going to be harder. I think the only way to win is to be aggressive. You don’t come here to come in second place.

“I’m just going to go for pretty much every pin that’s not silly and just backing myself – what’s the worst that could happen? I shoot 10-over, big whoop. That’s pretty much how it’s going to be.”
