INDIAN GOLF HAS ITS NEWEST STAR IN TALENTED TEEN PRASHANTH

As women’s golf continues to grow in India, the nation now has a new star to champion on the Ladies European Tour (LET) after 18-year-old Avani Prashanth earned her full card at Lalla Aicha Q-School.

After missing out on Final Stage qualification in 2023, the talented teen returned to Morocco on a mission last month playing fearless golf to eventually finish T16 and secure her 2025 status.

“It’s a weight lifted off my shoulders,” Prashanth said. “I’ve been looking forward to this since December last year [when I didn’t get a card]. It feels great that I finally got it done! I can’t wait for next year to start.

“There weren’t too many nerves on the final day because I started off pretty well on the first nine holes. But then the birdies dried up so it started to get a little scary towards the back end, on the last three or four holes. I kept crossing past the leaderboards so it was quite nervy, but then I birdied 18 and it was all ok.

“I’m very happy. I’m now going to celebrate with all my family and friends!”

Prashanth, owner of one of the most unique swings in golf, turned professional in September 2024 having risen to 39th in the World Amateur Golf Rankings.

But despite her age, the Indian already has valuable experience on the LET having competed nine times making seven cuts. On top of these starts, Prashanth made history on the LET Access Series (LETAS) in 2023 when she won the Ahlsell Final at Elisefarm to become the circuit’s first Indian winner.

“I’m from Bangalore, India,” she explains. “I started playing golf when I was three years old. I was always really active as a kid so I’ve always loved playing. I’m hardworking and committed, and I can’t wait for next season on the LET.”

India has yielded several success stories in the last decade on the LET, with Olympians Aditi Ashok and Diksha Dagar both bursting on to the scene to become multiple time winners.

Last year, Pranavi Urs also earned full LET status and impressed during her debut season finishing 17th in the Order of Merit.

Inspired by their success, Prashanth now hopes she too can help women’s golf grow in India as she prepares for her rookie year on the LET.

“It’s nice to have so many Indians out there on Tour,” the 18-year-old said. “It’s definitely very inspiring to all of the younger girls back home – to know there are now quite a few Indian girls out there. It honestly shows that it’s very possible, that they can come and do this as well. I think it’s great!”
